Description
This imagined view of a whale swimming under the north span of the Deception Pass Bridge was inspired by the time I walked over the bridge and saw a seal swimming through the kelp beds below, and by seeing gray whales from the beach in Langley. Gray whales do sometimes swim through Deception Pass, but it would take some magical timing to be looking down from the bridge at just the right moment. Sometimes when you want to see something, the best option is just to paint it from scratch. The bird's-eye perspective from an imagined point out over the water required some creative juggling of reference photos from many viewpoints, but allowed me to combine a view of the bridge with the dizzying sense of looking down from that high vantage.
